Golfers fourth at River Falls

Lindsey Frank watches her tee shot on No. 8 during a big Rivers Conference meet at the River Falls Golf Club last Tuesday.

The Raider girls' golf team continued its busy schedule before the opening day of school with a five-team big Rivers Conference match at the River Falls Golf Club last Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Head coach Bill Schaub said the girls started well with pars and bogies, but as the day progressed the team began to struggle. The tight course proved too much for the Raiders as they ended with the highest 9-hole score of the year with a 203 to finish fourth, ahead of only Eau Claire Memorial.

Eau Claire North won the match over host and conference leader River Falls to put some pressure on the Wildcats this coming week. Rice Lake placed third.

The Raiders were led by Jill Wanner with a 45, her best conference score of the year. Senior Haley Uzpen shot 52 followed by Maggie Lewis and Lauren Berglund at 53.

"We did not have our best day today, but we will continue to practice hard and get ready for next week," Schaub said.

The Raiders have two more conference matches this week, Tuesday at Eau Claire North and Thursday at Rice Lake.

"We hope to play well and move up in the standings," Schaub said. "The girls are due to put up a good team score."

The Raider JV hosted River Falls last Monday at Badlands Golf Course and posted a team score of 210, led by Jordan Loken's season-best round of 51.

Samantha Koehler followed with a 52, Brooke Miller carded a 53 and Lucy Stiles a 54.

Tuesday at River Falls, Karlye Peterson posted her best score of the season with a 49.

"Karlye has been working hard on her short game and today it really paid off. I am excited to see how she improves as the year continues," Schaub said. Wednesday, at New Richmond, the JV shot 217, led by Miller, Peterson and Kaitlyn Hoehn with 54s.
