HASA swimmers gear up for finals
Hudson Area Swim Association (HASA) swimmers have been busy practicing and competing in the water, and are gearing up for the finals meets in the Long-Course season. HASA was represented by 22 athletes at the College of St. Catherine meet on July 7 and 8. The "Swimmer of the Meet" was awarded to Evan Groehler, 17. Evan took some time off in the spring but has made an amazing comeback by dropping time across the board and finding success in new events. Among his accomplishments are a 7.67 second drop in the 100 fly, 8.19 drop in the 200 back, 27.49 drop in the 400 IM, a 5.18 second drop in the 100 free, and an amazing 65.77 second drop in the 500 free for a time of 5:37.10. On top of all of this he was also part of the 200 free relay that set a new HASA Team Record alongside his teammates Lucas Rukavina, Matthew Baker and Shane Blinkman
Other notable swims are Shane Blinkman breaking his own HASA record in the 100 back for the 11/12 boys age group with a new time of 1:05.68; Matthew Baker, 13, breaking the 400 IM record with a time of 5:04.62; and Lucas Rukavina, 17, breaking records in three events: 50 back (27.92), 100 fly(57.66), and 400 IM (4:45.71). HASA was also represented at this meet by Ethan Alwin, Hannah Alwin, Rachel Baker, Cale Blinkman, Maria Blinkman, Sophia Daley, Maree Elliott, Karina Gilson, Sydney Glampe, Cole Groehler, Bridget Huepfel, Grace Johnson, Kate Johnson, Violet Penman, John Cooper Ramthun, Madalyn Stickler, Samantha Troyer and Jasmine White.
The following weekend, HASA swimmers competed an outdoor long-course pool in Bloomington, Minn., for the C Finals Meet. Ethan Alwin, 9, was awarded "Swimmer of the Meet" because despite being new to competing in Olympic sized pools, Ethan has some really great swims. Ethan's most notable swims include a 4.13 second drop in the 100 meter Freestyle, a 4.49 second drop in the 50m Freestyle, and a 12.81 drop in the 200m Free with a final time of 3:39.62. Ethan also took fifth place in the 200 meter Individual Medley. In addition to Ethan, HASA was represented by: Hannah Alwin, Sophia Daley, Cole Groehler, Frances Holmstadt, John Cooper Ramthun, Madison Romig, Madalyn Stickler and Jasmine White.
The HASA swimmers will be competing next at the AB Finals in Winona, the Long-Course State Championship at the University of Minnesota, and the National meets in Chicago and Kansas. HASA is part of USA Swimming, which is the same team Micheal Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin, Minnesota native Rachel Bootsma and other Olympians will be representing in London.
Hudson Area Swim Association practices at the Hudson Middle School and competes at various meets throughout the Twin Cities. HASA will begin accepting registrations for new swimmers on-line within the next couple of weeks. For more information, go to www.hudsonswimteam.org or send inquiries to President@hudsonswimteam.org .
