HASA swimmers shine at St. Thomas meet

Athletes from Hudson Area Swim Association (HASA) recently participated in the 2014 FoxJet Winter Classic “A” Meet at St. Thomas University.  HASA was represented by Matthew Baker, Rachel Baker, Sven Becker, Faith Eilertson, Maree Elliott, Drew Hay, Ellery Ottem, Sadie Ottem, Ella Stein and Alex Weaver.

HASA athletes posted personal best times in 80 percent of their events at the meet.  Among the highlights, two HASA swimmers received high point awards in their age group, nine new state and zone qualifying times were posted, and eleven team records were set.

Hay posted a Zone qualifying time in the 50 backstroke, his second qualifying time for the April 2014 NASA Showcase Classic in Florida and the Zone meet in August 2014.  Hay received third place high point for the boys 9/10 age group.

Becker also qualified for the NASA Showcase Classic swim meet in the 50 backstroke and 100 butterfly. He posted significant time cuts in each of his five events at the meet.

Ellery Ottem was awarded first place high point for the 8-and-under girls age group.  She posted personal best times and took first place in each of her six individual events.  Five of her swims were new team records.

New Champ times were posted by Rachel Baker (50 freestyle), Becker (50 backstroke, 100 butterfly), Faith Eilertson (50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke), Ellery Ottem (50 freestyle, 50 butterfly), and Sadie Ottem (50 butterfly).

New team records set at the meet included Ellery Ottem in the 8-and-under girls (50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 individual medley), Stein, 11/12 girls (200 breaststroke); Matt Baker, 13/14 boys (200 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly), and the 12 and under girls 200 medley relay (Sadie Ottem, Stein, Rachel Baker, Elliott).

HASA’s short course season runs through late February to mid-March, depending upon qualification for finals meets. HASA will host the C Finals meet Feb. 22-23 at the Hudson Middle School.  More information about HASA can be found at www.hudsonswimteam.org.
