Hayward VA clinic back in business
The Veterans Administration clinic for veterans that suddenly closed in Hayward last December has a new lease on life.
It reopened on a temporary basis in March.
Now, the Veterans Administration has signed a long-term contract to keep it open for at least another five years.
A contractor from Kentucky shut the place down, saying the VA reneged on promises to support the operation.
Now, the VA and its staff are running the place themselves.
The clinic serves veterans in seven northwest Wisconsin counties and the area's Indian tribes.
Sawyer County veterans' service officer Ray Boeckman says any doubts about the clinic's future have now been put to rest. He says the VA facilities run by private contractors are not as reliable as those run by the agency itself.
