Health warning to avoid blue-green algae during holiday weekend
Wisconsin health officials urge Fourth of July swimmers and boaters to avoid blue-green algae.
If you're going on a lake this Fourth of July, Wisconsin health officials say to watch out for blue-green algae.
State health officer Seth Foldy says there's a risk in touching or swallowing water with high levels of the algae.
And he warns people and pets to avoid swimming where the water looks like pea soup or paint.
Experts say algae blooms create smelly layers on the water surface and they can be anywhere from green to red in color.
Health officials urge everyone swimming in lakes and rivers to wash thoroughly with soap and water when they're done.
