Marit and Jeff Mears were in downtown Stillwater when her ticket was picked in the Hudson Daybreak Rotary raffle for a new Ford Mustang at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Jeff Mears thought someone was playing a prank on them when they returned home and listened to the phone message asking them to be at the North Hudson Pepper Fest royalty coronation at 3:30 p.m. to claim their prize.

But they went, and, sure enough, they were the winners.

Marit hadn’t decided if she wanted to keep the car or the alternate $15,000 in cash. Her 15-year-old son Jordan’s vote was to keep the Mustang. He has his driver’s learning permit.

The Mearses reside in Houlton and have two other children who weren’t home when the prize was presented in front of the large Pepper Fest crowd. Marit said 10-year-old Carter and 8-year-old Grace would be disappointed that they missed the excitement.

Marit bought three of the raffle tickets for $20 from Deb Fogler about a month and a half ago.

Shawndell Hall of Frederic won the second-place prize of $1,000 in the drawing.
