Houlton students-actors shine on stage

Sixty-four Houlton students in grades 2-5 participated in this year's Prairie Fire Children's Theater production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the school.

Sixty-four Houlton Elementary School students in grades 2-5 entertained audiences with a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on Friday, March 5.

For the second year in a row, Houlton Elementary School has played host to Prairie Fire Children's Theatre, a professional touring troupe that brings theatrical experiences to students throughout the upper Midwest. A team of two actor/directors leads students through five days of auditions, rehearsals, and performance, giving children an opportunity to try out their "acting chops."

"It is amazing to see an outstanding performance put together in just a week," said Sue Hellmers, Hudson School District K-2 Literacy Coach, Prairie Fire Children's Theatre coordinator and Houlton parent. "But what is even more amazing to me is to see the kids you'd never dream of seeing on stage having the time of their lives. Prairie Fire Theatre gives all kids this opportunity to be on stage, and they love it."

Prairie Fire was made possible, in part, by Houlton Parent Association and through the support of Houlton's teachers, staff and parents.

Prairie Fire Children's Theatre will return to Houlton Elementary in the 2011-2012 school year.
