Hudson Area boys' lacrosse team opens with 11-6 victory
The Hudson Area Lacrosse Association's boys' varsity team opened its first game of the season with a 4-0 first-quarter lead over Cretin-Derham Hall last Wednesday, April 18, at Grandview Park. Cretin came back within two goals during the second quarter, but Hudson never gave up the lead and went on to win 11-6.
The first quarter started out all Hudson, with the Raiders scoring four unanswered goals, one each by Carter Bewley and James Fall and two by Brandon Schwartz.
The momentum seemed to shift, however, when Hudson received a 3-minute non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick. Lacrosse sticks must conform to official dimensions including stick length, head width, and size and shape of the pocket. With Hudson a man down, Cretin scored one goal at the end of the first quarter and another at the start of the second to cut Hudson's lead to 4-2.
Hudson and Cretin traded goals to start the second quarter, with Luke Ousdigian scoring for Hudson, to make the score 5-3, before Schwartz scored his third goal of the game to give Hudson a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Hudson scored the first three goals of the third quarter -- one each by McKay Potter, Matt Weseli and Bewley -- to open up a 9-3 lead.
Cretin cut the gap to 9-5 before Schwartz sandwiched his fourth and fifth goals of the game around a Cretin score to make the final 11-6.
Taren Motte and Potter each had two assists in the victory while Weseli, Bewley, Ousdigian, Schwartz, Joey Hernandez and Spencer Knapp had one each. Hudson goalie Jordan Madden stopped 12 of the 18 shots he faced.
After playing at Northfield, Minn., this past Monday, April 23, Hudson will host Delano, Minn., Friday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the Grandview Park field.
