Hudson's Mimbach quarry has been added to a list of possible disposal sites for fly ash from the Allen S. King power plant at Bayport, Minn., Community Development Director Dennis Darnold reported to the City Council Monday night.

Darnold said the Mimbach quarry was put on the list of eight possible disposal sites after a Lake Elmo, Minn., site was dropped from consideration. The seven other sites being considered are all in Minnesota.

Darnold said members of a landfill advisory committee comprised of municipal officials and environmental group representatives from Minnesota argued that a Wisconsin community also should be considered for the fly ash landfill because electricity generated at the King plant is also used here.

St. Croix County was invited to participate in the committee after the Mimbach quarry, located between Hanley and Tower roads on the west side of St. Croix Business Park, was added to the list of possible disposal sites.

No communities want the fly ash, Darnold told members of the city's Plan Commission last Thursday.

Fly ash is a waste product of burning coal for the generation of electricity. According to the landfill advisory committee, it is made up of many elemental chemicals that should not be released into the environment.

The City Council instructed Darnold to participate in future committee meetings.

"It's in our interest to have the city represented," said District 6 Alderwoman Carah Koch.
