"Some may think that they have to drive to the Twin Cities to receive high-tech care," said Patty Schank, RN, manager, Surgery & Procedure Center, Hudson Hospital & Clinics. "The truth is that Hudson Hospital offers almost all of the same surgical procedures and with more personalized care in a healing environment."

The team of surgeons and surgical staff at Hudson Hospital provides the community with a vast array of surgical services including: ENT, General Surgery, OB/GYN, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry and Urology.

To provide optimal patient care, the surgical team stays abreast of advances in knowledge, and surgical skill, which allows the surgeons to diagnose and treat a variety of surgical diseases while offering the benefits of modern technology.

In 2011 surgery volumes averaged 130 surgeries a month and are up 12 percent in 2012. With three surgical suites equipped with the latest technology and high definition monitors, they have both the capacity to continue growing volumes and offering quality outcomes. In fact, Hudson has significantly lower surgical infection rates at 0.7 percent vs. the national average of 1.9 percent.

General surgery and endoscopy have seen the largest growth rate at 27 percent over last year. With the addition of Dr. Paul Scott, General Surgeon, joining Dr. Kirk Jacobson, General Surgeon, Hudson Physicians, patients now have greater access to a wide variety of simple to complex surgical services in Hudson.

General surgery focuses on abdominal organs such as intestines, stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder and the spleen. They also treat hernias, thyroid and parathyroid disease, as well as surgical breast care and trauma surgery. Scott and Jacobson often treat conditions with minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery. The following procedures have seen the greatest increase in volumes at Hudson Hospital: gastro-intestinal operations, colonoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Additional specialists are also available at Hudson for surgical services: several OB/GYNs offering gynecological surgical procedures, specialty physicians offering ENT, plastic, podiatry and urology surgeries; and a number of orthopedic surgeons from St. Croix Orthopedics.

"The real benefits for the patients seeking surgery at Hudson, is they can be scheduled within 1-2 weeks vs. much longer wait times up to six months at other facilities," said Schank. Primary care providers, such as Family Physicians and Internal Medicine Physicians refer patients to a surgeon specializing in their needs.

"With additional providers and the latest technology, we're able to increase services to the community," Schank said. "We've also seen positive patient comments expressing their gratitude with a great experience at Hudson."

Scott offers several new surgical procedures, including laparoscopic colon resections, laparoscopic splenectomy and laparoscopic adrenalectomy. He has expanded services for laparoscopic management of paraesophageal (hiatal) hernia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Scott has a strong interest in minimally invasive surgery and has written and presented research on advanced laparoscopic procedures. He also specializes in the surgical management of endocrine diseases including thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas and adrenal gland operations. Scott also completed Hudson's first laparoscopic splenectomy and adrenalectomy earlier this year.

"Any operation is a major event in a patient's life and it is a privilege to provide surgical care. I very much enjoy the evaluation and diagnostic process prior to surgery as well as performing the indicated operation. My goal with every patient is to improve his or her life as a result of an excellent outcome after surgery," said Scott. Receiving his medical education at the University of Minnesota, he completed a surgery internship and residency at Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Ariz. His previous clinic practices were with specialists in General Surgery in Maple Grove, Minn. Scott joined Hudson Physicians in April 2011.

"I was attracted to surgery because I enjoyed the additional technical challenges presented in surgery. It often lends itself to making an immediate improvement in a patient's life."

Both Scott and Jacobson emphasize the importance of colon screenings. All adults can be at risk of colon cancer and should be screened appropriately.

"General surgery is continually evolving as advancements in technology are discovered," said Jacobson. "We offer a wide array of surgical services at Hudson Hospital, many on an outpatient basis."

Jacobson has provided over 12 years of surgical experience to the Hudson community, and 10 years of prior surgical experience. He attended medical school at University of Wisconsin and residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. His special surgical interests include minimally invasive procedures: laparoscopy and endoscopy, and breast surgery, including special training and certification in breast ultrasound.

"We have also seen tremendous growth in our pain procedures with 130 percent more in 2012 than 2011. " Schank said. "Lincoln Likness, DO, Sports & Spine Medicine, Hudson Physicians started offering pain reduction procedures in fall of 2010 and the volume of these procedures has seen a steady increase from last year."

Hudson Hospital Surgery & Procedure Center staff is also highly skilled. They include: certified perioperative nurses, perianesthesia RNs who admit and care postoperatively for patients and monitor patients during procedures; surgical technicians assist physicians; sterile processing technicians; an aide and a unit coordinator, and Certified Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) on staff.

Hudson also offers a special tour called "Sneak Peek" for children having surgery and personalized education for patients having hip or knee replacement surgery. For more information, go to www.hudsonhospital.org or call (715) 531-6520.
