Threatening weather Friday night didn't dampen spirits at the seventh annual Hudson Relay For Life, where approximately 800 participants raised $172,117 for the fight against cancer.

Severe weather warnings, thunder and lightning did necessitate moving the 10 p.m. luminary ceremony inside the adjacent Rock Elementary School gym, but beyond that the event went forward as planned.

Opening ceremonies began with an address by event chairman and cancer survivor Mike Yell. The Relay For Life torch was lit by Grant Truhler, who was recently diagnosed and is undergoing treatment for a rare type of cancer. The honorary chairs of this year's event were 8-year-old Katie Ryder of Hudson and Diane Velaski of Baldwin, who spoke at the luminary ceremony to honor those who have been lost to cancer and those who have survived. Both are cancer survivors.
