Calvin Norman Olson, 18, was charged in Washington County District Court with one count of fifth-degree drug possession and one count of misdemeanor theft by swindle.

Olson was released from Washington County jail after posting a $3,000 bond on March 28.

According to a criminal complaint, Woodbury police received a report from Walmart loss prevention staff that two male shoplifting suspects had been detained at the store.

The loss prevention worker told police that he had observed the males select merchandise from the off the racks and walk it over to the return desk, where they exchanged the goods for gift cards.

According to the complaint, Olson received a gift card in the amount of $45.59. He then left the store, but re-entered and met up with the other male, who was allegedly using his gift card to buy cigarettes.

The two males then left the store before being detained by Walmart security staff.

During a pat-down by Woodbury police, Olson admitted he had a pill in his jacket pocket. He also admitted to conducting the merchandise-for-gift-card scam, the complaint states.

Olson told police the pill in his pocket was heroin-based Ecstasy. The pill tested positive for Ecstasy, police reported.

Olson was set to return to court today.
