Hudson tennis team off to a 4-0 start
The Raider boys tennis team started the season on the right foot by sweeping Chippewa Falls 7-0 in its Big Rivers Conference opener last Thursday, before going 3-0 at the Husky Challenge Saturday in Eau Claire.
The Raiders defeated Altoona, 7-0, Marshfield, 5-2, and Eau Claire Regis, 4-3, to go undefeated on the day.
“It’s sure nice to finally start playing,” Hudson coach Dave Dahl said. “While we’re off to a good start, it’s going to take a little time to sort out the lineup. We’ve got a good group of kids; they’re practicing well. We’ve probably got 14 players capable of challenging for a varsity spot.”
Dahl said this year’s team will be led by senior captains Jack Schulte, Sam Duchow and Cal Johnson. Fellow seniors Jacob Huseboe, Mitch Karras, Kody Owens and Ben Wirth also return, as does defending BRC singles champion, sophomore Mark Johnson.
“We’ve got a nice nucleus,” Dahl said. “But they know nothing is going to come easy this season.”
Duchow, Karras, Owens, Schulte and Mark Johnson all went 4-0 to start the season. Junior Noah LeBrun also won all four of his matches while junior Quinn Zacharias contributed three wins to start the season.
The Raiders will host their first home match of the season this Thursday against Eau Claire North at 4 p.m. They’ll travel to the two-day Wausau West Invitational Friday and Saturday, April 25-26 before visiting Baldwin-Woodville for a nonconference match Monday, May 28.
“There’s plenty of tennis to be played, but at the same time it’s an awfully fast season,” Dahl said. “Assistant coach Carol Szyman and myself are looking forward to good things.”
