The new Hwy. 35 and Hanley Road interchange on the east side of Hudson may be open to traffic by Friday if the weather cooperates and the remaining utility work is completed by then, a Wisconsin Department of Transportation official reported Monday.

Paul Conlin, the DOT's supervisor for the $4 million project, said the construction has gone smoothly since its start last April.

The unique features of the interchange are two traffic roundabouts on Hanley Road at the top of the Hwy. 35 entrance and exit ramps.

The circular roundabouts are being used instead of traffic signals to control traffic through the interchange. The transportation department maintains that roundabouts are safer and less expensive to maintain than signal-controlled interchanges.

The roundabout's circular design directs all traffic in a one-way, counterclockwise flow, allowing each motorist to make a right turn onto their destination street.

Instructions on how to drive the Hanley and 35 roundabouts can be found on the DOT's Web site at

The DOT Web site says the traffic level on Hwy. 35 north of the roundabouts is currently about 24,600 vehicles a day. It is projected to reach 48,950 vehicles per day by 2025.

The city of Hudson's share of the cost for the Hwy. 35 and Hanley Road interchange is $2 million. Most of the cost is being paid with Tax Incremental Financing revenue and impact fees charged to land developers.
