Ignite Martial Arts expands in new location
Hundreds of children and adults have enjoyed taking karate classes in Hudson at Ignite Martial Arts. The company recently relocated to Carmichael Crossroads next to the Azul Tequila restaurant.
Owner Daine Gorban, a Twin Cities native and current Woodbury resident, first discovered karate when her children took classes 11 years ago. Before long, she took up the sport, became an instructor and in 2008 purchased the Hudson branch of USA Karate, which opened in 2005.
In 2010, the name changed to Ultimate Martial Arts School, when six schools on the east side of the metro decided it would be easier respond to customers if they operated on a smaller scale.
"We were six independent schools working under the same name," said Gorban. "In June of 2012, I decided to go out on my own and changed the name to Ignite Martial Arts."
The name may have changed but the quality of instructors and the structure of classes has remained highly rated. The new location offers two classrooms, a seating area for parents and an additional area immediately inside the door for casual viewing.
"We teach American Sport Karate," said Gorban. "It is sort of a hybrid, which is most like taekwondo, using open hand techniques but with the addition of weapons. The focus is self-defense."
"There are so many aspects of the training," said Gorban. "It is invigorating, a great work-out and always challenging. You can see progress but it is not immediate gratification. It is a goal oriented activity and it has many awards built in to it."
"We customize our approach to each individual student," said Gorban. "Students benefit in many ways. Learning to focus is one and better classroom behavior and grades have been witnessed. This training has a profound impact in all those different areas. Students come in for all different reasons. We really want the parents to be involved. We have such a great set of students it is like a small community." According to Gorban, earning a black belt means the students have mastered the basics and are proficient at defending themselves.
Ignite Martial Arts is open for classes Monday through Friday from 4-9 p.m. ; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on Sunday. On Tuesday and Thursday it is open at 2 p.m. for its homeschool program.
