Joseph G. Urban, 92
Joseph G. Urban, 92, of Monroe, father of David Urban of Hudson, died at home Wednesday, June 12.
The youngest of 10 children, he was born in Fort Atkinson on Feb. 22, 1921.
He graduated in journalism at Marquette University, spent the next four years in the Coast Guard during World War II, and went on to a long career in radio broadcasting in Janesville and Monroe.
On Jan. 25, 1947, he was married to Sally Ann Linke. They raised their six children in Monroe, where Joe and others started WEKZ radio station. Joe worked there in sales and became a familiar voice on the air for over 50 years. Later in his career he managed the station.
His hobbies included vegetable gardening, camping with his family, and skiing, which he took up when he was 50.
Preceding him in death were his parents and siblings, a granddaughter, Heather Urban, and his wife, Sally, who died in 2009.
Surviving are his six children, Susan Urban of Middleton, Peter Urban of Clinton, Mass., Mary Jo (Donn) Groom of New Zealand, Paul (Kay) Urban of Monroe, David (Alice) Urban of Hudson and Matthew (Rhonda) Urban of Monroe; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Among his grandchildren are David's children, John Urban of Beijing, China, and Corinne Urban of Hudson.
Visitation was on Father's Day and the funeral was at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church in Monroe, with a luncheon and burial afterward.
