Kwik Trip robbery suspect caught

A 21-year-old Chicago man was arrested on Oct. 7 on eastbound I-94 near Baldwin, just minutes after he allegedly robbed two college students at gunpoint in the parking lot at the Kwik Trip on Crest View Drive.

According to the Hudson Police Department, Michael Antoine Payne is being held on robbery and other charges in the St. Croix County Jail. His vehicle was stopped by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department. Authorities confiscated a BB gun and a wallet belonging to one of the victims from Payne's vehicle.

Hudson Police Chief Marty Jensen said the two college students from UW-Stout gave police a good description of Payne and his vehicle, including the license number, and told them what direction he was heading.

Within minutes of issuing the description via police dispatch, Payne's car was sighted near the Baldwin exit on eastbound I-94 and pulled over.

According to the St. Croix County jail log, Payne could also be facing charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting in addition to the charge of robbery with threat of force. There is also a felony warrant on Payne from Illinois.

The Hudson Police Department is conducting the investigation into the robbery.
