Maria Lamb, who grew up in the town of River Falls, finished last among 16 contestants in women’s 5,000-meter speedskating during the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, today.

Lamb, 28, a three-time Olympian, hoped for a top-10 finish in her only Olympic race. She finished 38.1 seconds behind gold medalist Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic.

“I know I am capable of much more than today's result showed, but I am proud to have fought my way here and given it my all,” said Lamb in a Facebook comment posted shortly after noon our time. “I know I gave that race absolutely everything I had, my legs just didn't have what I needed and wanted today.

“A huge thank-you to everyone who has stood by me and supported me.”

Ireen Wurst of the Netherlands earned the silver medal in the event, and

Carien Kleibeuk, also of the Netherlands earned bronze.

Lamb, who grew up on “a little hobby farm” 3 ½ miles east of River Falls and whose parents now live in Hudson, was the only U.S. woman who competed in the 5,000 meter speedskating race.

She has been living in Utah and training at the Utah Olympic Oval -- the track, she said, where most of the country’s elite-level skaters train.
