Learn how to preserve food at Phipps

Three classes on preserving peaches and tomatoes will be offered Aug. 6 and 29 at The Phipps Center for the Arts. These classes are part of an ongoing series, The Art of Thoughtful Living, co-sponsored by River Market and The Phipps. Some supplies will be available for purchase.

--"From Field to Fork: Peach Preservation" is from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, with Geralyn Karl. Karl will cover the history, methods, tools of the trade, safety, nutrition and economics of food preparation. Participants will assist in the preparation of peach preserves, jam, salsa and pickles.

--"Canning Tomatoes" is from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. The class provides a hands-on workshop of instruction on canning tomatoes in the simplest way. Participants will receive illustrated instructions as well as ideas and recipes.

--"Canning Salsa" is from noon-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Khaiti Kahleck will walk participants through all the steps of making salsa to can at home with instructions and recipes to take home.
