Dear Editor,

After trying to figure out how the curly light bulb companies make their new fluorescents burn for thousands of hours, we decided to leave our fluorescent light over the kitchen stove turned on without ever turning it off.

Before our experiment, we were lucky to make the newly mandated bulbs last a month. At $3-$5 per bulb, that didn't seem economical. This recent bulb has lighted the stove for several months with no sign of darkening.

Someday I may try to calculate whether it's cheaper to turn the bulb off and on to save electricity or leave it on and minimize bulb expenses.
