Linder's: Growing in Hudson
Linder's is celebrating 100 years in the growing industry. This year one of their popular Flower Marts opened in Hudson. It is the first one outside of Minnesota, opening last week in the south Plaza 94 parking lot.
"We have 51 flower marts from Becker to Hudson and from Minnetonka to Cottage Grove," said Mindy Corby, assistant division manager, who has worked for Linder's for 13 years.
"The main store is on Rice and Larpenter in St. Paul," said Corby. "That is where they started 100 years ago as celery farmers on that very spot." Soon cut flowers grown for wholesalers and the retail market were added. Today the main garden center, which opened in 1984, is on the same spot. The growing range is located in Lake Elmo. Linder's grows all of its annuals, including hanging baskets, container gardens, nine packs and most of the perennials.
"We bring in nursery stock from Bailey's Nursery, which is locally owned and operated," said Corby. "And we have stock from Monrovia and Greenleaf as well."
Twenty-two years ago, Linder's introduced the concept of Flower Marts, bringing their product to the customers. The concept caught on and at this time of year, you can see the marts sprouting in parking lots throughout the metro area.
The business is still family owned and operated by Dave, Lil and Peter Linder, all siblings and the third generation. A fourth generation is being brought into the industry.
"Every Flower Mart is a little different," said Corby. "They vary in size and shape and sometimes in product. We expect the Hudson store to completely turn over product every two to three days. Some marts are so busy they turn over their stock every day."
Seasonally, Linder's employs 700 to 800 people while the 51 flower marts are open. There are always two employees working, with a staff of 10 to 12 at each location.
Flower Mart hours are Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, go to www.linders.com.
