The Hudson Middle School team, coached by Roger Davis of North Hudson, won first place at this year's global competition in Nashville, Tenn. The group joined several other local teams that have taken the top honor at the international competition with their creative and unique problem-solving productions.

Also performing at the board meeting was the Hudson Prairie Elementary team, which placed fifth out of 71 teams at the global competition.

Both teams performed for the board and audience.

The elementary team was introduced by Coach Melissa Olson. The youth demonstrated an exercise to get the creative juices flowing.

Coach Roger Davis introduced his middle school team and gave them an impromptu challenge, much like the kind of thing they must do in competition. Within five minutes, using a set of props that included cotton balls, tin foil, pipe cleaners and newspaper, they presented a skit that explained just why they love DI.

Both teams were honored by the School Board with achievement certificates. DI coordinators Liz Malanaphy and Anita Stilwell also accepted a state proclamation honoring the Hudson program from State Sen. Sheila Harsdorf and State Rep. Kitty Rhoades.
