Location found for SCC elementary classes
After a Tuesday, April 30, fire closed St. Croix Central Elementary, district officials have been searching for a place to hold classes for the remainder of the school year. District Superintendent David Bradley said the district has identified Rolling Ridges Girl Scout Camp, located at 965 Alexander Road, Hudson. The camp is approximately 6 miles northwest of Roberts.
Bradley said the plan is for students to begin classes at Rolling Ridges on Monday, May 6.
Rolling Ridges was closed down as a Girl Scout camp in October 2010, according to River Valleys Girl Scouts public relations manager Sara Danzinger. She said the camp was closed down because the Girl Scout council simply had too many camps in the area.
Because the camp has been closed since 2010, Bradley said several things need to be done before it can be used as a school, such as turning on utilities and making sure the camp facilities meet state safety regulations. Bradley said the district is currently working to ensure those regulations are met by Monday.
"We are confident we're going to get those things taken care of," Bradley said.
Bradley said the district plans to use the camp's main building, which has a capacity of more than 500 people, to house the kindergarten through second grade students, as well as the elementary school offices. The district plans to use two other large buildings for the third and fourth grade students.
If everything goes according to the district's plan, the district will lease the facility from River Valleys Girl Scouts for the rest of the school year.
The SCC school district will hold a public meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Croix Central High School. Members of the school board will be present to answer questions for the public.
