Chief Master Sergeant Luther Sidney "Sid" Johnson, 69, of Hudson died peacefully on Friday, April 25, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.

Sid was born on May 23, 1938, in Macon, Ga., the son of Hilton and Minnie Johnson. He attended grade school and graduated from Wilkinson County High School in Gordon, Ga.

As a young man, he knew he wanted to serve his country. He enlisted in the Armed Forces, where he would proudly serve in the United States Air Force.

He was to further his education by graduating from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, where he received his master degree in business management and administration while on active duty.

On May 20, 1961, he was united in marriage to Patricia Wasson at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in South Ruislip, England.

Sid gave his all for our country through a decorated and rewarding career in the United States Air Force. He has received the Air Force Commendation Medal with five Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Army with one device, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with six devices, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device with five Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Distinguished - Presidential Unit Citation, to name a few.

He was an expert marksman. He served in Korea, England, Vietnam, Germany and several bases in the United States. He worked many years in military administration as well as personal administration and security.

Following his retirement in 1984 at Edwards Air Force Base, he worked for General Dynamics and Lockheed-Martin on AERO testing programs.

When he wasn't in uniform, he enjoyed spending time with his family and teaching them the values of life. He loved to go hunting for fowl, squirrel, deer; he also loved fishing, and camping in the great outdoors.

He enjoyed serving as a leader for the Boy Scouts and bowling with his friends and family. He also took great pride in his amateur pilot's license and flying the skies.

Sid will be remembered by his wife, Pat; son, Floyd (Molly) Johnson; daughter, Patricia (Tad) Cornwell; grandchildren, Rose Johnson, Nikolas, Sydney, Kristin and Michael Johnson; step-grandchildren, Chad and Melanie; brothers, James (Hoko) Johnson, Arnold (Feida) Johnson and Rodgers Johnson; sister, Mary Busby; brothers/sisters-in-law, Jean Bornman, Floyd (Vivian) Wasson, Alice (Charles) Parker, Mary (Harold) Thompson, Rita (Curt) Abbott, Charlene (Sonny) Stoevel, Linda (Dan) Ness, Karen (Mike) Williams, Kathy (Jim) Rognholt and Dennis Wasson; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hilton and Minnie Johnson; granddaughter, Jessica; brothers, Rufus and Felton; sister, Shirley McCoy; brothers-in-law, Steven Wasson and Mina McCoy; parents-in-law, Clarence and Edna Wasson.

Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hudson.

Burial, with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force, will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Visitation was Thursday, May 1, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to the service at church on Friday.

Memorials are preferred.
