Man dies in New Years Eve chain-reaction crash on I-94
ELK MOUND -- A man, who had gotten out of his car on I-94, was killed and seven other people injured in a chain-reaction crash that occurred at about 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31.
The accident, which involved one semi unit and eight other vehicles, occurred on the eastbound side of I-94 at Hwy. 12 near Elk Mound in Dunn County.
Bob J. Jackson, 30, Eleva, was killed. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, Jackson was outside his car when he was struck by a semi whose driver was attempting to avoid other crashed vehicles in the road.
Jackson's vehicle was parked on the median shoulder and was undamaged. It remains uncertain as to why Jackson was stopped there and outside his car, according to the State Patrol.
At the time, roads were ice covered and slippery.
The driver of the semi, Mustafa Hashi Egal, 28, Minneapolis, sustained minor injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Luther Hospital in Eau Claire where he was treated and released.
Other injured persons were transported by ambulance to Red Cedar Medical Center in Menomonie or Luther Hospital.
Traffic was re-routed for approximately three and a half hours. The crash remains under investigation by the State Patrol.

--A 2004 Freightliner driven by Egal.
--A 2010 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Bradford A. Hosak, 32, Minnetonka, Minn. Neither Hosak nor his passengers -- a 28-year-old woman from St. Louis Park, Minn., and an 8-year-old girl from Minnetonka -- were injured.
--A 1997 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Samantha L. Sullivan, 17, Arkansaw. The driver was not injured, but her passengers -- Taylor D. Sullivan, 16, Menomonie, and Hnou Hang, 15, Menomonie, were treated at Red Cedar Medical Center.
--A 2007 Dodge Caravan driven by Charles E. Carmichael, 60, Woodstock, Ill. The driver was not injured, but his passenger, Barbara J. Carmichael, 59, was taken to Red Cedar Medical Center.
--A 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Jeremy W. Pire, 33, Farmington, Minn. Two passengers in his vehicle -- Jody L. Pire, 34, and Charlie W. Pire, 6 - were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, a 2-year-old boy, was not injured.
--A 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Timothy P. Holtz, 21, Wauwatosa. Neither Holtz nor another 21-year-old male passenger was injured, but passenger James S. Conway, 22, Wauwatosa, was taken to Red Cedar Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
--A 2005 Ford F150 driven by Patrick B. McMahon, 23, Eau Claire. He was not injured.
--A 2006 Saturn Ion driven by Michael G. Richmond, 28, Coon Rapids, Minn. Richmond was not injured.
