Authorities said a man sexually assaulted a woman at gunpoint in Marshfield, and he was later found dead about 60 miles to the west in Cadott.

Marshfield Police Chief Joe Stroik said his officers got a call Tuesday morning from a resident who heard a woman crying for help from an apartment next door.

Officers found the 25-year-old woman bound to her bed, and she was apparently restrained for several hours. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries.

A 6-month-old child was found unharmed in the apartment.

About an hour and a half later, Chippewa County got a call from an unknown man saying "My girlfriend is in the apartment tied up, alive, and the baby is OK."

Stroik said it appeared the woman and the 36-year-old male suspect had a previous relationship and the child's relations were not immediately known.

Chippewa County authorities did not immediately release the man's name or how he died. The incidents remain under investigation.
