Margaret 'Marge' Johnson, 93
Margaret "Marge" (Suennen) Johnson, 93, passed away peacefully on June 21, at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington, Minnesota, where she had resided for the past few years.
Marge was born on Jan. 17, 1921, in Lakeville, Minnesota, to Ted and Bertha Suennen. She moved with her family to Hudson, Wisconsin as a young girl and graduated from St. Patrick's Grade School in 1934, and Hudson High School in 1938. In 1939, Marge began dating the love of her life, Merlin O. Johnson, also of Hudson, and married him on April 11, 1942. Merlin worked for the Chicago & NorthWestern Railway, where promotions and transfers took them and their four children to Sioux City, Iowa, and Minneapolis, in addition to Hudson. Merlin passed away in 1968, at age 50 due to a brain tumor.
Marge forged a career in retailing, beginning as a bookkeeper and clerk at her dad's store, Nelson & Suennen Hardware in Hudson. After a hiatus to raise four children in the late 1940s and 1950s, Marge resumed her career in the Silver department at Younker Davidson's in Sioux City, and later at J.B. Hudson Jewelers in Minneapolis for 33 years. Her hard work, dedication, and thorough merchandise knowledge made Marge a favorite with both customers and store supervisors. Marge retired in 2003, focusing her time on family, reading, needlepoint, and other activities.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Lea Rawlings; brother, Teddy; and her husband, Merlin.
She is survived by her four children: Ann (Joe) Pugliese of Minneapolis, Tom (Pat) Johnson of San Diego, Arlene (Kirk) Winkler of Omaha, and Larry (Sue) Johnson of Plymouth. Marge is also survived by all nine of her grandchildren: Marie (Joe) Schick of Boston, Chris (Amy) Winkler of Johnston, Iowa, Jenny (Kirk) Hofer of Omaha, Reed (Julie) Johnson of Brooklyn Park, Tracy (Erik) Stacklie of Blaine, Aaron (Angela) Johnson of New Hope, Melissa (Derek) Stevens of Chanhassen, Michael Johnson of San Diego (currently serving in the Peace Corps in Namibia, Africa), and Alex Johnson of San Diego. Marge is also survived by an expanding number of great-grandchildren, currently numbering twelve, with one more on the way.
Thank you to her caregivers at Park Nicollet, The Colony, Fairview, and Masonic Home.
