Tom Kingsbury is raising funds for a new Persian Gulf memorial at the site of the Highground Veterans Memorial west of Neillsville.

He's also recreating a ride made a quarter century ago by Tom Miller, who rode one mile for each of the 1,244 Wisconsin troops killed or missing in the Vietnam War.

That ride raised funds which started the Highground which was originally a Vietnam memorial, but expanded to include those from other wars.

The new Persian Gulf memorial will be dedicated to Wisconsinites who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East.

The 56-year-old Kingsbury is a Vietnam-era veteran.

He has raised $14,000 for the project so far and his goal is to raise $30,000.

He started his bike ride last week at the Highground, and he'll finish it on Sunday when he meets with riders on six other routes at a picnic in Neillsville.

Kingsbury was in Oconomowoc Wednesday, where he met with Gold Star families. He's been riding over 100 miles a day.
