Motu, Hawksford will represent Hudson in state wrestling semis
MADISON - Dima Hawksford at 160 pounds and Eliot Motu at 220 will be Hudson's representatives in the state wrestling semifinals as they won their quarterfinals matches early Thursday evening at the Kohl Center.
Hawksford scored another impressive spinning throw and takedown which put Mt. Horeb/Barneveld's Tristan Luther right on his back in the second period. The five-point throw made the score 6-0 and Hawksford held on to win 6-2.
Motu took a 5-1 lead after scoring a pair of takedowns in the second period to Oconomowoc's Nick Gomez. Gomez got an escape and takedown in the third but Motu held on to win the match 5-4.
Motu's goal was simply to win a match at state in his first-ever bid. Getting to the semifinals was a "pleasant surprise."
"I wrestled my style, which to slow the pace of the match down and wrestke my speed," Motu said. "It only takes a takedown to win it and I always keep that in mind.
The Raiders advanced all their wrestlers through the first round but not the quarterfinals. Austin Koski gave up a five-point move to Milwaukee Bradley Tech's Travis Smith and lost 6-0 at 145. And at 182 Derek Schindler lost in overtime to Menomonee Falls's Ayoola Olapo. Schindler almost got the takedown near the end of the third period but never had control near the edge of the mat. In OT it was Ayoola scoring the takedown.
The semis are tomorrow night starting at 7 p.m. Both Schindler and Koski will wrestle in the consolation round tomorrow morning starting at 10 a.m.
