Boaters and campers on the Mississippi River will have new federal rules to deal with after Memorial Day.

They're part of a master plan to conserve the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which includes all of the Wisconsin shore.

Starting May 27, all glass containers will be banned on beaches and other refuge property.

Campsites must be at least 200 feet away from trails, boat landings, roads, and parking lots.

Fruit and nut collectors will be limited to two gallons a day.

For boaters, eight new seasonal no-wake zones will be created on the Mississippi. And only electric motors will be allowed on 1,600 additional acres.

Refuge officials talked about having a lot more restrictions but they were scrapped after people complained.

The final rules were adopted in 2006.
