Claudia Schmidt performs Sunday

Singer/guitarist Claudia Schmidt will explore folk, blues and jazz idioms, accompanied by her 12-string guitar and mountain dulcimer, at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at The Phipps Center for the Arts, 109 Locust St. Tickets are $21 for adults and $14 for all students with a current I.D. Phipps gets Somerset grant

The Phipps Center for the Arts recently received a Challenge America grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support The Bench Project, a community arts project for high school and elementary school students in Somerset. The Phipps public art project uses community-designed and -constructed art as a means to create benches - each a work of art - to understand and express the local history, environment and character of each town. The Somerset bench, which is scheduled for completion this fall, will join three others that were created in 2006 in St. Croix Falls, Hudson and Bayport. Space lists activities

The Space, is hosting an evening of fashion, style, dance and music -- "Out of the Closet: Expressions in Fashion" - at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12. Tickets are $20 and include appetizers. A Mother's Day Tea is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, catered by Sorella's. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for youth 11 years and younger. The Space is located at 156 High St., New Richmond. UW-River Falls stages play

The upcoming UW-River Falls production of "Look Back in Anger," running April 24-26 and May 1-3, tells the story of an angry young man and the troubles he puts his wife and friends through in the English Midlands. Guthrie Theatre actor Sean Dooley directs the show. For more information, call the box office at (715) 425-3114. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and an hour prior to each performance. Tickets are $4 for students and $7 for adults.

Band celebrates 25 years

The St. Croix Valley Community Band is commemorating 25 years with a trip to the Czech Republic May 24-June 3. "The history of the wind band is rich in the Czech Republic. It seems fitting that we are taking our music to share with people in this country who celebrate music and cultural heritage," said Dr. Kris Tjornehoj of Hudson, director of the group. Anyone interested in joining the ensemble should contact Tjornehoj at (715) 425-3940 (work), 386-7067 (home) or Kristin.tjornehoj@uwrf.edu. Cost is $2,295 per person. Additional musicians are still needed. Band rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7-9 p.m. June 10-July 22.

Orchestra performs

Numerous guests will be featured with the St. Croix Valley Symphony Orchestra in its concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, in the William Abbott Concert Hall, Kleinpell Fine Arts Building, 420 Cascade Ave., on the UW-River Falls campus.

Manny Laureano is the first trumpet player with the Minnesota Orchestra. He will join UW-RF faculty Dr. Tom Barnett in a performance of Vivaldi's Double Trumpet Concerto. Also on the program is Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20, D Minor, movements 2 and 3 featuring River Falls High School student Tony Capparelli. Angela Lamb is a member of the Minnesota Youth Symphony. She will perform the Barber Violin Concerto, movement 1, with the orchestra. Also on the program is Dvorak's Slavonic Dance Op. 46, No. 8, Hungarian Dance by Brahms, and Russian Sailors' Dance by Gliere. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for students. Art students featured

New Roots Duo plays Old Gem

The New Roots Duo will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Old Gem Theater, 116 S. Knowles Ave., New Richmond. Concert marks Earth Day

Several Hudson-area singers are performing in the Valley Chamber Chorale concerts April 18, 19 and 20 at the Washington County Historic Courthouse in honor of Earth Day. The featured work will be a commission by Aaron David Miller that will honor the beauty of the St. Croix Valley and all of nature. Miller is an emerging composer who is now working in the Twin Cities. A world-class composer and jazz pianist, he will join the chorale for these performances. Times are 8 p.m. Friday, April 18, 4 and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20. Tickets are $32 for adults and $27 for seniors and students.
