Bridge sponsors local author
Bridge for Youth with Disabilities will host a reading and book signing by local author Donna Karis at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the First Presbyterian Church, 1901 Vine St. Karis is a contributor to a collection of essays entitled "A Cup of Comfort for Parents of Children with Special Needs" (May 2009; Adams Media). She is a River Falls resident and mother of three, including her son, Kurt, who has epilepsy and is the subject of her story. A share of the proceeds from the sale of her book will benefit Bridge. Book-signing is Saturday
Daniel E. Van Tassel, author of "Back to Barron: Life in the Heartland at Mid-Century," will read from and sign copies of his book from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Back to Books in downtown Hudson. The book is a set of essays about rural life in the 1940s and '50s.
Dixieland Band plays Sunday
The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band will perform at The Phipps Center at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 14. The band is made up of six musicians who play 18 instruments. Only side stage seating is available. All tickets are $22; for reservations, call The Phipps Center ticket office at (715) 386-8409.
New summer choir starts
Hudson High School Choral Director Andy Haase is starting the Hudson Community Summer Choir and invites area singers to join. The group will rehearse at the school from 7-9 p.m. Mondays beginning June 15 and concluding with a public performance at 7 p.m. Monday, July 27. The choir is open to any singer interested in performing challenging, fun and rewarding choral literature. There is no audition process, but previous singing experience is recommended. Tai chi continues
Tai chi classes will continue from 9:30-11 a.m. Thursdays, June 18-Aug. 6, at The Phipps Center for the Arts. The class offers the yang style long form of tai chi chuan. Certified tai chi instructor Mark Tomlinson, with 14 years of experience, conducts the classes. The fee for eight sessions is $96. Ballroom dancing party
A ballroom dance party will be offered from 7:30-10 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in the dance studio of The Phipps Center for the Arts. Tom Larson will offer a ballroom and Latin dance lesson from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. for dancers of all levels to have fun. Refreshments are provided. Admission is $10 per person.
