The Army first lieutenant was killed Sunday, when his convoy was attacked by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Khost province.

Dewhirst was a member of the 506th Infantry Regiment from Fort Campbell, Ky. He had been in the Army since May of 2006.

Dewhirst graduated from Onalaska High School in 2001, and was in the National Honor Society and the student council.

He also spent a year at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at Daytona Beach.

One of Dewhirst's classmates at Onalaska, Adam Servais, was also killed in Afghanistan. That happened in 2006.
