Federal safety officials have cited a northwest Wisconsin company after the death of a worker in April.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued five citations yesterday against A-1 Excavating in Bloomer.

OSHA investigated after Eugene Hakes, 33, of Cadott was killed April 14 in a trench in New Richmond where a city water pumping station was being built.

Authorities said Hakes was cutting through a watermain pipe with a large power saw, when the saw kicked back and hit him in the neck.

A-1 Excavating has until the end of August to respond to OSHA's citations.

They carry penalties of up to $98,000.

Meanwhile, the agency says the company is challenging about $700,000 in penalties issued in February for 11 alleged violations of federal standards involving trenches.
