St. Croix Animal Friends, a group of individuals working to build a shelter in the county for homeless companion animals, will hold a candlelight vigil for the pets that have touched lives in so many ways. The vigil will start at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Prospect Park, 511 Wisconsin St. in Hudson.

The purpose of a vigil is to provide a quiet and comfortable setting where people can meet, support each other and share similar experiences.

The Rev. Stephanie Anthony, minister of First Presbyterian Church of Hudson, will lead the service.

Light refreshments will be offered. After a time of quietly coming together, everyone will be given the opportunity for brief readings and remembrances.

The vision of the St Croix Animal Friends is twofold: 1) To promote a positive relationship between animals and people through education and community programs; and 2) To provide animals with a compassionate experience in a temporary residence and to assist them in finding their forever homes.

St. Croix Animal Friends now owns property in Roberts. Organizers say the group will launch a capital campaign this fall to continue to raise money for a new shelter.

The group also helps low-income families by providing free pet food and spay/neuter financial assistance.
