Peek-A-Boo Boxing Gym opens in Hudson
Boyd Davis, a native of St. Louis, Mio., moved to St. Paul to box. The sport has been part of his life since he was young.
"I continued to do it to stay out of trouble," said Davis. That is one of the driving forces behind his opening Peek-A-Boo Boxing in Hudson. "The main purpose I am doing this is to get kids off the streets."
Davis was a four time Golden Glove champion, a Silver and Diamond Glove champion and was on the USA Boxing Team in 1986-87.
The school is named after a boxing style, which Davis himself used in the ring.
He moved up to amateur fighter status and ultimately fought as a professional. He has 18 professional fights under his belt, winning most of them.
"I enjoyed the travel," said Davis of his days on the boxing circuit. He moved to River Falls in 1996. Peek-A-Boo Boxing was founded in 2009.
Over the years, he has hosted boxing shows during River Falls Days at the West Wind, the Abundant Life Church and the River Falls hockey arena. All of the shows are competitions featuring USA registered boxers.
While he works full time in Woodbury, boxing and his commitment to youth continues.
Peek-A-Boo Boxing Gym is open at 709 Rodeo Drive, Suite 110, on the north side of I-94 off exit 4.
"Basically we are offering competition classes and classes for people to get into shape," said Davis. He trains at the beginning level: Juniors and Novice classes, starting students at age 8. The next step is to the open class if the students are ready to progress.
"I want them to learn the steps thoroughly first before they move up," said Davis. "First and foremost it is a sport. I enjoy doing this."
Davis and his business partner are bringing in a hip hop artist to the gym for a workshop on May 25.
