Performance features work of guest choreographer
Among the many pieces The Phipps Dance Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8, at The Phipps Center for the Arts will be a hip-hop dance choreographed by Torrion Amie.
Since 1997, Amie has choreographed for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls dance theater program, and since 2000 he has been an adviser to the UW-RF dance team. As a professional dancer, Amie has shared the stage with such dance and musical artists as Dmitriy Tuboltsev and Oksana Konobeyeva, formally of the Bolshoi Ballet, as well as jazz greats, national R&B and hip-hop recording artists, and national gospel recording artists.
In addition to his piece, the program will include modern, jazz, lyrical, tap and contemporary waltz dances.
The Phipps Dance Company caters to more serious dancers and is comprised of St. Croix Valley-area girls between the ages of 13-18 who auditioned for the company. The artistic directors are Stephanie Campbell and Barb Zak.
Also featured in the program will be dances from the recent Phipps Children's Theater production of "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," with each dancer representing one of the four winds in a distinctive dance style.
General admission tickets for this one-hour concert in the Black Box Theater are $10. For reservations, contact The Phipps ticket office at (715) 386-8409 or www.ThePhipps.org.
