Call for artists - Afton Art in the Park and Gift Gallery

Submissions from artists are currently being sought for the annual Afton Art in the Park and the Gift Gallery at The Phipps Center for the Arts. Postmark deadline for Afton Art in the Park is March 15 and for the Gift Gallery, March 2; visit www.ThePhipps.org, click on visual arts, then artist opportunities, or send a SASE to The Phipps, 109 Locust St., Hudson WI 54016, Attention: Afton Art in the Park or Gift Gallery.

The 2009 Afton Art in the Park is the 30th anniversary of this art fair, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., in the Village Square in Afton.

The mission of the Gift Gallery is to sell high quality, unique and handmade works of art by regional artists. All work is done on consignment (65 percent to the artist). Artists will be selected through a jury process. For more information, contact The Phipps Center at 715.386.2305, ext. 103.

Private violin lessons

Private violin lessons for students ages 7 through adult are offered throughout the year by Sarah Bertsch, (715) 381-5735.

Private voice lessons

Elizabeth Hawksford Schaefer offers private voice lessons for ages 12-adult. Adults and homeschooled teenagers are especially welcome to call for available daytime openings. For more information, call The Phipps center at (715) 386-2305, ext. 101.

Ballroom dance parties

Tom Larson will offer ballroom dance parties Saturday, Feb. 21 and March 21, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the dance studio. Larson will offer a ballroom dance lesson from 7:30 to 8:30. Dancers of all experience levels are welcome. Refreshments are provided. Admission is $10 per person.

Yoga classes

Vinyasa Flow yoga classes continue Thursdays, 6:30-8 p.m. Beginning yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays, 9-10:30 a.m.

Classes are ongoing and may be taken at any time. Punch-cards may be purchased for $120 per 10 classes. Punch-cards are good for any of the three classes offered each week. Students only pay for the classes they attend. Students should wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.

Tai chi classes

Tai chi classes continue on Thursdays through Feb. 19 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The fee for eight sessions is $96.

Thoughtful Living series

A new series of classes, The Art of Thoughtful Living, will be offered at The Phipps Center for the Arts in collaboration with River Market Co-op. To register, call Kellie Seth at River Market, (651) 439-0366:

--Creating Sacred Space - Feng Shui Demystified, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, with instructor Peg Leutele. $25 or $30.

--Introduction to Herbal Medicine, 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10, with herbalist Kiva Sherr; $10 or $15.

--Victory Garden Revival, 7-8 p.m., Thursday, March 5, with instructor Sara Morrison; $10 to $15.

Photography club

The Western Wisconsin Photographic Club meets regularly at The Phipps. Photographers of all levels of ability and experience are invited to these meetings. For more information, contact Margaret Strehlo, (715) 386-5048.

Healing Arts at Hudson Hospital

Currently on display are the works of Gloria Adrian, Teita Amberg, Chuck Avery, Robyn Stoller Awend, John Barnier, Bernel Bayliss, Barbara Bend, Susan McDonald, Chris Meyer, Jim Mulfinger, David Sebberson, Linda Statts and Teresa Zenk.

Gallery exhibits

A series of exhibitions featuring work by Laura Andrews, Kimber Olson, Gregg Rochester, Katherine Sandnas and Tara Sweeney, will be on view through Feb. 15 in the Galleries. In addition to these exhibitions, a show of watercolor paintings by Hazel Stoick Stoeckeler, paired with poetry by Elizabeth Weber, will be on view in the Atrium Gallery, and "Using Photovoice to Hear the Voices of Mothers Raising Children in St. Croix County" will be presented in The Commons.

"Ordinary/Extraordinary: The Art and Life of Stories," an exhibition of visual storytelling by artists from across the globe, will be on view in The Galleries Feb. 20-March 29.; a free public reception is Saturday, Feb. 21, 2-4 p.m. In this exhibition, artists from Liberia, Russia, Japan, the Midwest, East Coast and Belgium use painting, drawing, mixed media and video to bring to life all sorts of stories, both real and imagined. Artists are Susan Armington, James Disney, Heidi Hafermann, Catherine Kennedy, Tadashi Onoda, Alexandra Rozenman and Marie Simcox. Special events with the exhibition are a performance event (storytellers, musicians) Sunday, March 22, 2 p.m., in the Black Box Theater, for ages $5 and older (tickets $3 to $5); and a free artist roundtable discussion on sources of artistic inspiration, Sunday, March 29, 2 to 4 p.m. in The Galleries. Galleries hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters.

The Gift Gallery

The Gift Gallery offers unique fine art and traditional crafts by noted area artists. Gift certificates are also available.
