The installation of the fiber optic cable needed to provide the town of Troy with high speed Internet service hasn't gone smoothly.

A town resident notified the Star-Observer Wednesday, Aug. 3, after landline phone service to a good share of homes in the town was knocked out.

The resident, who didn't want to be identified, said it was the second time in two weeks that service to his home had been interrupted.

He said he had been told by a Baldwin Telecom official that the company contracted to locate buried utility lines had done a poor job, and that the company installing the fiber optic cable was having problems with cutting into utility lines it didn't know were there. Baldwin Telecom is the company installing the high speed Internet service.

Matt Sparks of Baldwin Telecom acknowledged the problems related to unlocated utility lines, but said the Aug. 3 interruption was caused by a mower running into a phone and DSL pedestal on County F.

He said the pedestal held wires serving up to 900 residences.

Sparks said Baldwin Telecom had met with the company that located utility lines, and the company was going to be doing some additional work.

He indicated that he expected fewer service interruptions in the future.
