Police and sheriffs can't charge fees for taking fingerprints

Email

It's against the law for Wisconsin police and sheriff's departments to charge fees for taking fingerprints.

Grant County officials asked the attorney general if it would be OK to charge fees for fingerprints which are submitted to the state for background checks.

But J.B. Van Hollen said the law does not give law enforcement the authority to charge fees for fingerprinting in any circumstance.

Job applicants often need to get fingerprinted as a part of background checks for fields like health care and education.

They're also mandatory for certain criminal suspects when they're arrested.
