Hudson Prairie Elementary Principal Melissa Gould has resigned her position, effective June 30, according to district communications specialist Tracy Habisch-Ahlin.

Gould is in her second year as principal at the school, the largest elementary in the district, with an enrollment of approximately 660 students. Gould, who had done her student teaching at Rock School prior to graduating from UW-River Falls, was hired in 2006 to replace Cathy Shimon who left to become superintendent of schools in Clayton.

With Gould's resignation, there are now two principal positions open for the upcoming school year, one at Prairie and one at Willow River Elementary. The current principal at Willow River, Pat Hodges, will be leaving that job to assume the leadership of the district's new elementary, River Crest, which is scheduled to open in the fall.

The Hudson Board of Education was informed of the selection of Dolf Schmidt as the new principal of North Hudson Elementary at the board meeting last week. Schmidt has been serving as school manager under acting principal Peg Shoemaker, who will be returning to her job as associate director of learning services full time, effective immediately.

Superintendent Mary Bowen-Eggebraaten told the board that the personnel office has received more than 60 applications for the positions. She said they expect to present the candidates for the two principal positions at the March board meeting.
