A state program that helps companies cut pollution is doing its job but it needs to be watched more closely.

That's what the Legislative Audit Bureau said Thursday about the Environmental Cooperation Pilot Program.

It began 11 years ago, to help companies test innovative ways to save the environment and reduce pollution.

The Department of Natural Resources has worked with seven businesses. Auditors said those firms substantially cut five types of pollution from 2000 to 2006.

But the audit said the DNR should create a better way of measuring the companies' performance, including assessments of individual firms.

The bureau also suggested better ways to measure administrative savings.
