Republican John McCain will step up his efforts to win Wisconsin after he basically conceded Michigan Thursday.

His campaign says it will scale back its Michigan resources and put them instead in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Maine.

McCain is trying to win at least couple close states that went Democratic in 2004, like Wisconsin did with a margin of 0.4 percent.

But McCain faces a new uphill battle in those battleground states as Democrat Barack Obama has made gains in the polls in recent weeks.

In Wisconsin, Obama was leading by 2 to 4 percent in early September.

But Thursday, the Atlanta firm of Strategic Vision had Obama up by 9 percent in Wisconsin, at 49-40. Two other recent polls confirmed that Obama was gaining ground here.
