Rabbits perish in Somerset barn fire
About 120 rabbits died in a rural Somerset barn fire early Friday morning.
The Somerset Fire Department was called out to a barn fire at about 2:40 a.m. at the the Michael and Deanne Ray farm at 1615 57th St., Somerset.
Mutual aid was provided by the St. Joseph and New Richmond Fire Departments. Crews were on the scene until about 9 a.m. Friday. About 30,000 gallons of water was trucked in to fight the fire.
According to Somerset Fire Chief Travis Belisle, the homeowners were awakened by the noise of the fire. The barn was already fully engulfed in flames by then and was nearly collapsed at that point. The barn was a total loss.
Belisle said about 120 rabbits, that were used for show purposes, died in the blaze. Some tractors and other farm equipment was also lost in the fire.
The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.
