Raider baseball team regional champs

Seventh-seeded Hudson scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and made them stand up in a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Eau Claire Memorial in a WIAA Division 1 regional championship game last Thursday at Carson Park in Eau Claire.

After Eau Claire Memorial took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth in last Thursday's regional final, the Raiders answered with a pair of runs in their half of the fifth inning.

Kellen Pearson beat out a base-loaded grounder to short to deny the Old Abes an inning-ending double play and allow Drew Pheneger to score from third with the tying run. Brett Steinwagner followed with a single to left to score Mike Hommes with the go-ahead run from third.

Stef Smith, the Raiders' third pitcher of the game, worked two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Steinwagner, Pearson and Smith combined to allow just two Old Abe hits in the game. Steinwagner started and went 3 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Pearson picked up the win with 1 1/3 inning of scoreless relief, striking out one and walking one.

Hommes and Austin Evenson each had two hits in the win.

Last Tuesday against Merrill, Todd Mork had two hits and three RBI, Chuck Peterson had two hits and two RBI, and Pheneger singled twice and drove in a run in the Raiders' 13-3 regional semifinal win.

Pearson contributed two RBI and scored twice and Josh Evenson singled, scored twice and drove in a run as the Raiders ended the game early with a 10-run fifth inning.

Pearson picked up the complete game win on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out three and walking three.
