Raider boys roll over River Falls, 53-35
The Raider boys’ basketball team shook off a stubborn River Falls squad to pull away for a 53-35 victory in a Big Rivers Conference rivalry game last Friday night in Hudson.
Alex Herink scored 26 points, Mathew Sparstad added 14, and the Raider defense held the Wildcats to 28 percent shooting from the field to improve to 7-6 overall, 3-2 in BRC play.
Hudson used an 18-3 second half run to put the game away. River Falls made just 11 of 39 field goal attempts, including a 0-for-13 stretch in the second half. They made just 3-of-19 three-point attempts.
The Raiders led by one, 13-12, at the end of one and by five, 22-17 at the break before Herink scored the first five points of the third quarter on a layup and three-point play to open up a ten point lead, 27-17.
River Falls trimmed the gap to four, 30-26, with one minute remaining in the third but a layup and free throw by Herink made it a seven point game, 33-26, with one quarter to play.
The Raiders broke the game open with a 14-1 run to start the fourth quarter to open up their biggest lead of the game, 47-27. Herink accounted for 10 of Hudson’s points during the run, including a three-pointer that made the score 45-27 with 4:21 remaining.
Hudson hit 53.1 percent of its shots from the field and held the advantage at the free throw line, connecting on 18-of-26 attempts compared to 10-of-17 for River Falls.
Jake Giordana contributed eight points in the Raider victory and Miles Lewis and Jake Neiderhauser scored two each while Jon Krier added a free throw.
Luke Murphy led River Falls with 16 points. The Wildcats dropped to 4-7 overall, 1-4 in BRC play.
The Raiders return to action this Friday, Jan. 24, at Eau Claire North (4-8, 3-2) before returning home to host Menomonie (9-4, 2-3) on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7:15 p.m.
