It took a little while for Hudson's offense to start clicking Friday night against Chippewa Falls. But the defense was stifling from the start.
The Raiders held the Cardinals to just 91 total yards of offense while Michael Hommes and Dan Loughney scored a pair of touchdowns apiece as Hudson remained undefeated with a 36-0 shutout at Newton Field.
"Defensively, the staff had a great game plan and the players executed it very well," Raider had coach Adam Kowles said. "It's difficult to take away everything that the opponent can do offensively, but if you can limit any big plays you always have a great chance. Offensively we struggled a little bit at first and had to make some adjustments, but the offensive line really did a nice job opening up holes most of the night."
After trading punts most of the first quarter, Hommes scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter, then picked up a botched snap and ran it in for the two-point conversion, to give the Raiders an 8-0 lead.
Raider linebacker Ethan Stanchik took advantage of a high snap on a Cardinal punt midway through the second quarter to sack the punter at the Chippewa Falls 36. Hommes broke free for a 34-yard gain down to the Cardinal two, and two straight carries by Loughney resulted in a 1-yard touchdown, Sam Somerville booted the extra point to give Hudson a 15-0 lead.
Chippewa went three and out and Miles Lewis fielded the Cardinal punt near midfield and returned it to the Chippewa 12. Two plays later Loughney scored from 5-yards out and Somerville added the extra point to extend the Raider lead to 22-0.
Hommes scored his second touchdown of the night when he fielded the second half kickoff at his own two yard line and weaved his way 98-yards for a touchdown. Somerville's kick made the score 29-0.
After another Cardinal punt the Raiders took over at their own 30 yard line. Joseph Kelly ran for one first down and a Cardinal personal foul resulted in another before quarterback Ian Zastrow busted loose for a 23-yard gain to the Cardinal 8. Kelly carried the ball over on the next play and Somerville tacked on his fourth extra point of the night to extend the Raider lead to 36-0 and institute a running clock with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter.
"I was pleased to see the effort from start to finish," Kowles said. "It didn't matter the time on the clock or the score of the game, the guys really kept up the intensity all night. The special teams were solid, and the two returns were huge."
Hommes led a Raider rushing attack that totaled 277 yards with 109 yards in 12 carries, in addition to his 98-yard touchdown return. Blake Amborn carried the ball three times for 56 yards while Loughney finished with 36 yards and two touchdowns in nine attempts.
Hommes attempted just three passes in the game, completing a 14-yarder to Jake Giordana to help set up Hudson's first touchdown of the game.
Alex Burgess led the Raider defense with six tackles, including a sack. Stuart Burns, Eliot Motu and Gabe Zastrow also recorded sacks in the game while Somerville and Cal Johnson each recovered a fumble.
The Raiders, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in BRC play, will host Eau Claire North (0-3, 0-2) in the annual Homecoming game this Friday at 7 p.m. at Newton Field and Kowles said the team won't rest on its laurels after its shutout over Chippewa Falls.
"Even though it was a quality win, there is a lot to work on in order to continue to try to improve each week," he said.
