Raider girls' cross country team runs to 10th at state meet
Raider senior Jack Kadidlo capped his high school career with a 19th place individual finish and Hudson’s girls’ team placed tenth out of 20 teams at the 101st running of the WIAA State Cross Country Championships last Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.
On a perfect day for running with a light breeze out of the west and temperatures in the low 40s, Kadidlo posted a time of 16 minutes, 23.66 seconds in the Division 1 boys’ race to finish 19th out of 190 runners in the his final race as a Raider.
“Jack accomplished his goal this year and that was to compete at the state meet and he ran a great race,” Hudson coach Don Krupa said.
Kadidlo finished less than a second behind Keegan McCluskey of Janesville Parker and two seconds ahead of Jack O’Neil of Cedarburg to capture 19th place. Olin Hacker of Madison West took the boys’ individual title with a time of 15:46.19 while River Falls’ Trent Powell was fourth in 15:58.13.
Hudson’s girls, in their third straight trip to the state meet as a team, improved one spot from last year’s 11th place finish to place 10th in this year’s 20-team field.
Arrowhead took the team title with 84 points while Whitefish Bay earned second place in a tiebreaker with Neenah after both teams finished with 122. Hudson finished tenth with 276, seven points ahead of 11th place West Bend West.
“This was another great performance by all team members,” Krupa said. “The team members ran some personal best times on the course but our placing did not lend itself to a higher team finish.”
Senior Sadie Kroll was the first Raider across the finish line in 28th place overall, with a time of 15:13.15, six seconds faster than her time at last year’s state meet. Sophomore Miranda Miller cut 55 seconds off her 2012 state time to finish 57th in 15:33.95 and senior Erin Wetzstein was 74th in 15:45.53. Junior Rachel Anderson took 113th in 16:06.22, also six second faster than last year while freshman Samantha Ritter was 148th in 16:30.35.
Junior Mary Knutson placed 162nd with a time of 16:46.16 and freshman Lauren Ichel finished 172nd in 16:55.23.
Krupa said the team will miss seniors Kroll, Wetzstein, Ellen Snyder and Erin Carlson, who have been part of all three of the Raiders’ last three state tournament seasons, including the team’s sixth place finish in 2011, its highest finish ever. He said injuries, including a late-season leg injury to Snyder, prevented the Raiders from being a top-five team at state this year.
“We will work hard in the offseason and improve on our placing in each race, because the girls want to be back at the state meet and improve on this year’s team place,” he said. “Returning next year will be the strong freshman group of girls that ran on varsity this season along with Miranda Miller, Rachel Anderson and Mary Knutson.”
Krupa said a string senior and junior class was the heart of this year’s Raider boys’ team.
“Jack Kadidlo, Don Clark, Noah Burns, Reid Schwechler, Logan Hammer and Andrew Spaight will definitely be missed, along with Henry Breaker, Nick Farago, Austin Graf, Nathan Karras, Nathan McPhetes, Colton Parks and Eero Tuomaala, who will also be leaving us through graduation in June,” he said. “The boys return two juniors, Jacob Schroeder and Michael Laraia, and a strong group of freshmen. With a lot of hard work from the returning young men and women we will have another successful and great season next year.”
