Raider girls' hockey team splits games up north
The Raider girls’ hockey team came home from a trip north last weekend with a win and a loss, beating Superior, 6-4, Friday night before losing to defending state champion Hayward, 7-2 on Saturday.
Ali Takkunen had a hat trick and Sydney Squires scored a pair of shorthanded goals and dished out three assists in Friday night’s 6-4 win at Superior.
Superior led 1-0 at the end of one before Takkunen scored twice in the first 2:32 of the second period to give the Raiders the lead.
Her first goal of the game came on a power play 1:52 into the period, assisted by Squires and Paige Johnson, and the same trio combined just 40 seconds later on Takkunen’s second goal to make it a 2-1 game.
Superior regained the lead with a pair of quick goals but Hudson ended the period with three straight scores, beginning with Takkunen’s third goal of the game, on another power play, assisted once again by Squires and Johnson.
Squires followed with back-to-back shorthanded goals, the first unassisted at the 13 minute mark and the second assisted by Johnson at 15 minutes, to give Hudson a 5-3 lead after one.
Superior made it a 5-4 game with a goal midway through the third period, but Katie Meierotto added an insurance goal with just under seven minutes remaining, assisted by Maddie Misura.
Raider goalie Julia Joseph finished with two saves as the Raiders outshot the Spartans 44-31.
Saturday afternoon at Hayward, the eighth-ranked Hurricanes scored the first seven goals of the game before Squires scored twice in the last five minutes to make the final 7-2.
Emma Steiner and Johnson earned assists on Squires’ goals while Nali Mullan finished with 19 saves.
The Raiders, now 4-2-0 on the season, visited Grantsburg to take on the WSFLG Blizzard this past Tuesday, Dec. 17, and will visit Black River Falls Thursday, Dec. 19, before competing in the Schwan’s Cup in Blaine, Minn., Dec. 30 – Jan. 1.
