Raiders sweep True Team Invite
If the annual Hudson True Team Track and Field Invitational is a test of how deep a team truly is, both the Raider boys' and girls' teams passed with flying colors this year.
Both Raider teams blew away their competition Friday at Newton Field, winning by nearly 200 points. The Raider girls' posted a total of 867.5 while the boys finished with 816. The closest girls' team to Hudson was Red Wing with 694 while the second place boys' team was Osceola with 626.5.
"There wasn't any real standout," Raider boys' coach Tom Klatt said. "Everyone did a good job all the way across the board."
Every competitor, from first place to 21st, earns points in a true team meet. And while both the boys and girls teams had a number of first place finishers, it was the performance of the Raiders' supporting cast that lifted them to the titles.
The girls' picked up 65 team points in the 800 meter run by placing three runners in the top five. Katie Wetzstein won the race with a time of 2 minutes, 30.08 seconds, Keri Wetzstein was fourth in 2:34.40, and Shannon Hartzell finished fifth in 2:35.74.
The Raider girls earned 61 team points in the 400 meter dash. Nicole Bruegger was second with a time of 1:03.82, Catie Weese took fourth in 1:05.39, and Emily Iverson finished eighth in 1:06.41.
In the discus, Alicia Bower took first with a toss of 119-feet and Jamie Lindstrom set a new Hudson sophomore record with a second place throw of 116-feet, 2-inches. Ashley Akey added a 14th place throw of 72-4 to give the Raiders 58 team points in the event.
Bower was second in the shot put with a distance of 37-2 and Lindstrom took third with 36-6 while Akey finished 14th with 27-9 to add 56 points to the girls' team total.
The girls boosted their team score with 58 points in the 1600 meter run. Katie Wetzstein took third in 5:33.57, Hartzell was fifth in 5:45.76, and Melissa Annen finished ninth in 6:00.34.
The Raiders also scored well in the 3200 meter run where Natalie Powell was third with a time of 12:28.97, Rachel Zachar took fourth in 12:34.45, and Katelyn Gross placed eighth in 13:01.12 to combine for 57 points.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Kierstin Guenther was third in 18.18 seconds, Kelsey McNamee took sixth in 18.61, and Racheal Knoke finished tenth in 18.93 to add 56 points to the Raiders' total.
Rachael Saathoff boosted the girls' team score with a second place time of 13.28 seconds in the 100 meter dash and Angela Tipp was second in the 200 meter dash in 27.01 seconds while Hardisha White took second in the long jump with a leap of 16-feet and the triple jump with a distance of 33-4.5. Cori Vought took third in the 300 meter hurdles in 52.55 seconds.
In the high jump, Saathoff and Whitney Theisen tied for third by each clearing 4-6, and in the pole vault Casey Fall tied for fourth with a height of 8-feet.
The Raider boys' scored well in the field events, led by Mitch Patrick and Michael Congdon sweeping the top two spots in the pole vault. Patrick took first by clearing 13-feet and Congdon was second at 11-6. Walker Macswain cleared 10-6 to finish fifth and give the Raiders a total of 60 team points in the event.
In the triple jump, Nicholas Lubinski took first with a distance of 39-8, Travis Hilde was third with 38-5.75, and Mathew Weeks finished fourth with 38-3 t account for 58 team points. The boys picked up 57 points in the long jump with Will Vance taking second at 18-11, Jenish Bhakta third at 18-10, and Nicholas Cadwallader third at 18-7.5.
In the high jump, Brody Swenson won with a leap of 6-1 while Benjamin Wilen was third at 5-10 and Joshua Roberts fifth at 5-6 to give the Raiders 57 team points.
In the 300 meter hurdles, Mark Tully was first in 42.96 seconds, Joshua Roberts took third in 43.52 and Nathan Smits was fourth in 43.67 for 58 team points. The boys picked up 55 points in the 400 meter dash with Cadwallader second in 53.48 seconds, William Johnson fourth in 54.68, and Congdon fifth in 55.33.
Cadwallader won the 200 meter dash in 23.72 seconds and Mike Heth was third in 24.02 while Nathan Smits won the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.5. Mathew Rudquist was second in the 3200 meter run in 10:12.63 and Dylan Coyer was third in 10:13.59 while Tyler Smith was second in the 100 meter dash in 11.62 seconds.
Mike Ludgatis took first in the discus with a toss of 145-11 and second in the shot out with a throw of 48-2.
This week is a busy one for the track teams, with a Tuesday quad meet at Osceola, followed by a Friday afternoon, April 24, meet at River Falls starting at 4:00 p.m., then a Tuesday, April 28 contest at Eau Claire Memorial, also slated for 4:00 p.m.
